2 seas and 3 civilisations
2 seas and 3 civilisations
Join us on an unforgettable journey through Mexico, where you will discover its diversity and beauty. On this 14-day adventure, we will go from impressive pyramids to hidden indigenous communities in the rugged mountains of Chiapas.
We will discover cocoa and coffee plantations, magnificent waterfalls, colonial cities and high canyons. This journey will take you to three coastal regions - the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean - and introduce you to three important civilizations: the Aztec, the Maya and the Olmec. The journey begins in vibrant Mexico City and ends in the tranquil beach resort of Playa del Carmen, where you will enjoy 4 days of rest and relaxation.
1. Day
Arrival in Mexico City and check-in at a downtown hotel.
2. Day
Teotihuacan - the name of this city translated from the Native American dialect Nahuatl means - the place where the gods were created, the City of the Gods. This city was one of the most important Aztec cities in the entire Mesoamerican region during the pre-Hispanic period, and you will have the opportunity to explore this “City of the Gods” with us. The pyramids of the Sun and the Moon are the landmarks of this city, they are 63 m and 45 m high and today it is possible to climb both pyramids and observe the surrounding landscape. During our visit we will take a walk through the Alley of the Dead or the local citadel, which will allow us to learn about the life and culture of the first of the three ancient civilizations, the mighty Aztec Empire. After the city tour, we will visit an obsidian processing factory (the most important mineral for all Mesoamerican tribes) or mageya processing factory.
Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe - we will take a look at the contemporary inhabitants of Mexico from the point of view of their religion. Our Lady of Guadalupe is still the most important patroness of all Mexicans, she is represented in every church, chapel and home in the country. Although she was imposed as patroness of Mexico by the Spaniards, paradoxically she became a symbol of the struggle for independence against the Spanish colonizers. The basilica is actually composed of several churches and chapels surrounding a huge plaza. It also includes the stairs at the bottom of which the famous miracles are supposed to have taken place. In the afternoon, return to your hotel in the city center.
3. Day
Zócalo: it is said to be the second largest square in the world after Red Square. It is the cultural, social and political center of all Mexico. A special feature of this square is the daily lowering of the national flag, which is more than 10 m long.
In the afternoon, transfer to the airport in Mexico City and transfer by plane to the southwest of Mexico, to the coffee-growing regions of the state of Chiapas. Arrival in Tapachula and transfer to the hotel.
4. Day
In the Soconusco region of Chiapas, there is a series of natural scenarios that offer visitors tourist destinations full of magic, nature, including a coffee tour, through a coffee farm that will allow you to learn about the production process of this beverage that attracts a large number of tourists to the south of the country. We will visit coffee plantations and explain the process of this fruit from its sowing to its final consumption.
5. Day
Breakfast and check out from the hotel. Transfer to the Pacific coast. Option to rest, swim or time to meditate and relax. Visit to the beach and therefore the first stop on our adventure to discover the 2 oceans of Mexico. Accommodation in a nature reserve.
6. Day
Morning departure from the hotel to one of the most beautiful areas of Chiapas, the town of San Cristobal de las Casas. On the way we will stop at Cañon Sumidero - this beautiful cañon, which reaches almost 1000m in places, will take us on a cruise down the Rio Grijalva. Perhaps the most famous natural feature is the so-called Christmas tree. This strange formation created by nature out of travertine resembles from afar this very symbol of Christmas. During our cruise through this canyon we will see many crocodiles, monkeys and many species of waterfowl.
In the afternoon, we arrive in San Cristobal de las Casas, a town with colonial charm that was visited by the Pope in 2015. Typical are the small red-roofed houses that huddle together to defend this Spanish colonial town from Indian attacks. Accommodation in San Cristobal de las Casas.
7. Day
Pyramids of Tonin - the site is large but there are surprisingly few tourists. At the time of its greatest glory, Tonina controlled large areas of present-day Chiapas and Guatemala. In the 8th cent. It fell under the influence of Palenque and began a slow decline. In this city you have the opportunity to see the latest date of the so-called Long Cycle, dated to 909 AD. Soon after that date the city fell into oblivion. Take part in the rediscovery of this place with us and discover the beauty of the Chiapas landscape from the top of the pyramids.
On the way to the heart of the second civilization we visited, the Mayan civilization, we will stop at the Agua Azul and Misol-Ha waterfalls. The cascading waterfalls of Agua Azul are special because during the day, due to the high degree of calcification of the water, the colour of the water changes from turquoise blue to a deep blue-green colour. The peculiarity of the Misol-Ha waterfalls is that at the bottom of the waterfall there is an entrance to a cave in which there is another smaller waterfall. In the evening arrival to the hotel in Palenque.
8. Day
Morning departure to the Pyramids of Palenque - Palenque is undoubtedly one of the largest and most beautiful cities of the Mayan world. At the time of its greatest glory, during the Late Classic period, it was the centre of political, military and religious power in a wide area, extending as far south as the Usumacinta River, which today forms the natural border between Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala. The place has a special atmosphere because it is situated at the foot of a mountain massif and is surrounded by lush tropical jungle vegetation.
Departure to Villahermosa. In the town there is a park which has been named Parque La Venta. It was given this name after an archaeological site located a few kilometres from this capital of the Federal State of Tabasco. Unfortunately, this archaeological site has been partly destroyed by the expanding petrochemical industry, and so the greatest gems of our sought-after third civilisation, the Olmec culture, are to be found in this very park. The park is home to the excellent La Venta Museum, which displays perhaps the most famous features of the Olmec culture, the several-metre high Olmec heads, each of which looks as if it is wearing a helmet on its head.
9. Day
Comalcalco Cacao Plantation - The Mayan civilization left behind a drink of the gods that we have managed to preserve, and today it is the most popular drink for children. Learn about its processing and production into a drink along with the making of chalkboard chocolate.
The west coast of the peninsula completes a jewel among colonial towns: Campeche is one of the most important Spanish towns in Mexico. From here, ships sailed to Spain filled with precious raw materials such as gold, silver, jade, cocoa among others, making it a rewarding target for pirates. After repeatedly sacking the city, the Spaniards began building an elaborate system of walls and bastions to protect the port from pirates. Accommodation in a hotel in Campeche.
10. Day
About 20km south of Uxmal is the small but all the more beautiful archaeological site of Kabah, which means "Mighty Hand" in the Mayan language. Much of this site has not yet been explored, one of which is the Palace of the Masks, which houses a total of 250 masks of the rain god. One of the most important sites of the so-called classical period is Uxmal. During the tour of this site you will be able to observe the construction of the pyramids in the so-called Puck style, which was characterized by the fact that care was taken about how the building looked on the outside but not much emphasis was placed on the culture of living inside. During our tour you will have the opportunity to see the magician's pyramid, which has been rebuilt 5 times thanks to the Mayan "century". Then we will see the Temple of the Nuns, we will continue by climbing the Gran Pyramid and we definitely can't miss the climb to the Royal Palace from where there is a beautiful view of the whole archaeological site. Accommodation at the hotel in Merida.
11. Day
One of the seven modern wonders of the world is the mystical Chichen Itza. We will explore the Temple of Kukulkan, where during the spring and autumn equinoxes it is possible to observe the natural phenomenon, the descent of the feathered serpent, later we will see and explain the principle of the ritual game of Pelota, and we will also look at the Temple of the Warriors. In the past this archaeological site was a great royal city, for this reason a visit to the Temple of Mnisek among others cannot be missed.
The next stop will be a visit to the cenote, in which it is possible to swim. For the Maya, cenotes were a sacred place as they believed it was the entrance to the underworld. Lunch.
One of y main products of the country is tequila and also for this reason we will end our adventure with a visit to a factory that produces this drink in the traditional way. In the factory you will be able to observe the process of tequila creation from the planting of the plant to the final tasting of the different types. Accommodation in Playa del Carmen or on the Riviera Maya.
